Chapter 17
Polygraph Test and Interrogation
On August 14, 2018, at around 5:45 a.m., the police called Christopher to see if he had heard anything from Shanann or the girls. He told them he had not heard anything. At 7:00 a.m., the police decided it was time to call in some extra help. They issued a âbe on the lookoutâ and gave a press release. The CBI called the police to say they saw the press release and would issue a Missing Persons Alert, also asking them for extra assistance in finding the Watts. They agreed and said someone was en route to assist them and were given all of the specifics on the case. When the FBI and CBI gathered, the police gave them all the information that had been gathered by interviewing Christopher, Shanannâs friends, colleagues, and they had made numerous searches of the Watts house.
At 6:45 p.m. on August 14, the police called Christopher asking him to come to the police station so they could ask him some questions. Christopher arrived at the police station around 8:00 p.m. and the police turned him over to talk with the CBI agent. The agent told Christopher there had been a possible sighting of Shanann and the girls at a Walmart store in Longmont. The photos were of an adult female and two female juveniles within the store. They showed Christopher the photos, and he confirmed it was not Shanann and the girls. They met only briefly at this time, but he did agree to return the next day for more interviewing. He left the police station around 11:00 p.m. that night.
Christopher also agreed before he left the police station that evening that the police could conduct another search of the house the next morning. He was staying that night with his friends, so they could come into the house as early as they wanted. They arrived at his house at 6:00 am. on August 15. They conducted a thorough search of the Watts home. It was noticed there was a sheet in the kitchen garbage can. Why would Christopher, if he had been planning this, be so careless as to leave a sheet in the kitchen trash? Itâs either he wanted to be caught or he had something major going on in his thought process. They noticed there was just one fitted sheet and one pillow case. The pillow case had some sort of residue on it that looked like glitter.
At 11:00 a.m., on August 15, Christopher arrived at the Frederick Police Dept. The plan was to do a polygraph test which Christopher had already agreed to. The door to the interview room automatically locks from the inside, but there was a key inserted into the lock that could be turned to open the door. They explained to Christopher the door was shut for privacy, but he was not under arrest and could leave at any time. He said he understood. The agent was not wearing a gun, badge or handcuffs, magazines, or any other police insignia during the polygraph and interview.
